The Effects of Static Pressure on Airflow IAQ and HVACR Motors

Indoor air quality (IAQ) has become extremely important to all of us whether it be in residential or commercial applications. Before COVID a major reason for system failure was poor static pressure conditions. Since COVID it has only gotten worse. Installing filters to block the spread of the virus is an often-used fix. However, this increase in static pressure often leads to poor air delivery and even quicker system failure.

This session will focus on static pressure, its sources, and what it does to the system. We will examine some of the myths associated with electronically commutated motors (ECMs) and static pressure and show how this technology can be a perfect answer for improved IAQ when used properly.

This presentation will provide the technician with an understanding of why the amps of a PSC motor DROP when the filter becomes dirty, not increase and will lead to premature motor failure. We will also discuss how this can lead to capacitor failure as well.
